The sunflower is native to most of North America, even as early as 3000 BC when it was cultivated by Native American peoples. It was an important source of food and medicine as well as a pigment for body paint. This majestic, sunshine yellow perennial can reach four metres in height and was regarded as sacred. At religious festivals in Peru, young women carried garlands or bunches of sunflowers and breastplates of pure gold were even fashioned with depictions of the sunflower. ~~ The Language of Flowers, Marina Heilmeyer
